Bierbrouwerij De Koningshoeven – La Trappe

The La Trappe authentic Trappist beers have been brewed at Onze Lieve Vrouw van Koningshoeven Abbey since 1884.

The monastery was founded by a small group of French monks who found refuge in Berkel-Enshot in Brabant. They settled in the moorland with some farmhouses and a sheep barn, formerly owned by King Willem II (Koningshoeven = kings farmhouses in Dutch) and soon the monastery was built. And not long after that, the first beers were brewed at the monastery as well.

The Benedictine wisdom of “Ora et Labora” – pray and work – is still in the epicenter of the daily rythm of the monks. The proceeds from the brewery are being used in the upkeeping of the Abbey and in various charities across the Globe.

Beer

Brouwerij Huyghe

The history of Brouwerij Huyghe starts in 1902 – but beer has been brewed on the site since 1654. Leon Huyghe arrived from Poperinge to Melle and started to work at the local Appelhoek brewery. During 1936-1939 a new brewhouse was built and in 1938 the name was changed into Leon Huyghe Ltd.. After this, the next significant turn took place in 1985, when the production was shifted from lagers and pilsners towards stronger, bottle conditioned ales.

26.12.1988 happened perhaps the biggest, most phenomenal uproar in the history of Brouwerij Huyghe. Delirium Tremens was first brewed and started to conquer the world. These days the brewery has maximum capacity of 35M litres per year and they are producing also 8 other brands, besides Delirium.

Since then, the brewery has grown – as has their reputation among the beer lovers.

Now Buxton is brewing a bit less than 1M litres a year, they have nine beers in their core range and over 30 specialities and seasonals annually. The quality and taste – consistently – is in the epicentre of what they are doing and enjoyable beers can be expected from them also in the future!

Beer

Klosterbrauerei Andechs

The monastery was decided to be founded on the ruins of an old castle, on top of the Holy Mountain of Andechs – already at the end of the 14th Century. The funds were raised and finally seven monks vere sent to the site from Tegernsee in 1455. They brought with them also the know-how about brewing to the new monastery. It is almost certain that beer was brewed at the monastery from the very beginning.

The monastery was transferred in 1850 under the St. Boniface monastery in Munich and from then on, the golden era of the brewery really started. Andechs beers are still brewed at the monastery and the operation is overseen by the monks – they are actual monastic beers, or “Klosterbier”. The beers from Andechs came to Finland for the first time in late 1990’s.

Beer

Krombacher

The Krombacher family brewery can be found in the small village of Krombach, roughly 100 km east from Cologne. The first written records about the brewery date from the start of the 19th Century, but there has been brewing activity in the village for hundreds of years before. Schadeberg family has owned the brewery for generations now.

The beers are brewed at the original site, using the famous spring water from nearby Mount Rothaar and according to the German beer purity law, the Reinheitsgebot. The unique spring water, Felsquellwasser®, is very soft and low in mineral content. This natural spring water is filtering through multiple layers of stone before it is used – untreated – in Krombacher beers, giving them their unique freshness.

The flagship beer in Krombacher portfolio is undoubtedly Krombacher Pils. Pleasently balanced, beautifully hoppy, nicely malty, traditionally brewed using the Felsquellwasser®  spring water. The traditional recipe and modern know-how come perfectly together in this Germany’s most favourite premium pils.

Beer

Mallaskoski

At Mallaskoski the sun doesn’t shine, life isn’t rosey, nor people shoot the breeze.

In 1921 the founder of the brewery, Johan Wallenius, started the making of his beverages in a dreary washhouse in the centre of Seinäjoki town. In 1928 Wallenius decided to buy land next to rumbling falls near by, and built a factory there. Already then their beer was known around the country for it’s exquisiteness and was even shipped abroad.

Even today the murky Mallaskoski beers are man made, without additives, using the same traditional yeast and the world’s most pure water while the thundering falls grumble in the background.

Beer

Oskar Blues

Oskar Blues began as a brewpub in 1997, although beer production didn’t start in the restaurant’s basement until 1999. In 2002, Dale Katechis (the brewery’s founder and owner) began canning their flagship beer, Dale’s Pale Ale, and the success story took off.

Oskar Blues was one of the first craft breweries of the new wave to choose cans over bottles. This decision sparked a true can revolution in the United States, which continues to this day. Cans are the superior choice both in terms of carbon footprint and beer quality. Today, the brewery produces nearly 15 million liters of beer across its two facilities in Colorado and North Carolina.

In 2016, the brewery joined forces with Florida-based Cigar City and a few other breweries to form the Oskar Blues Holding Company. In 2017, the collective was renamed CANarchy.

The brewery suffered severe damage during World War I, and for economic reasons, it was rebuilt to produce only top-fermented beers. In 1929, the brewery’s Spéciale Belge beer was renamed Spéciale PALM, laying the foundation for a success story. Officially, the De Hoorn brewery changed its name to PALM in 1974.

Today, PALM is part of the Royal Swinkels Group.

Having lived through the turbulent times of both world wars, Saku became the biggest brewer in the Estonian beer market in 1950s and has retained that position to this day, being neck and neck with its biggest competitor.

A new era for the brewery started in the early 1990’s, after Estonia re-declared its independence. The now famous beers were born – Saku Originaal in 1993, Saku Rock a year later, Kiss ciders 2001 and Saku Kuld in 2005. Since 2008 Saku has been part of Carlsberg Group.

St. Bernardus

Afthe the Second World War, Evarsiste Deconinck started to brew beer for the Trappist monks at Westvleteren, under license. This period lasted until 1992, when the brewing of Westvleteren Trappist Ales returned to the monastery. The beers brewed at St. Bernardus remained on market, now under St. Bernardus name.

The brewery is still using the original Westvleteren yeast and some of the beers are still brewed with the original recipe as well!

Beer

Stone Brewing

Stone Brewing was founded in San Marcos, California, in 1996. They have become a benchmark brewery for their hoppy, aromatic beers and West Coast IPA would not be a style it is now without them! Stone also had some activity in Europe, when they opened up a brewery in Berlin 2016. The operations there did not last very long and that brewery was sold 2019.

These days Stone has two larger breweries, one in Escondido California and the other in the East Coast, in Richmod. The beers which came to us were coming from the Richmond site, in cold transport, for the best possible freshness.

Sadly, Stone has decided to end all export operations from the beginning of 2025, therefore we will be running out of stock with Stone beers soon.
