St. Bernardus

The roots of St. Bernardus brewery lead to a dairy founded in the early 1900’s by Trappist monks who came from Mont des Cats, France. After the monks returned to France, the dairy was taken over by Evariste Dekoninck and he continued the cheesemaking the monks had started.

Afthe the Second World War, Evarsiste Deconinck started to brew beer for the Trappist monks at Westvleteren, under license. This period lasted until 1992, when the brewing of Westvleteren Trappist Ales returned to the monastery. The beers brewed at St. Bernardus remained on market, now under St. Bernardus name.

The brewery is still using the original Westvleteren yeast and some of the beers are still brewed with the original recipe as well!
