The history of Brouwerij Huyghe starts in 1902 – but beer has been brewed on the site since 1654. Leon Huyghe arrived from Poperinge to Melle and started to work at the local Appelhoek brewery. Just four years later Leon bought this brewery and changed the name into Brouwerij-Mouterij den Appel. During 1936-1939 a new brewhouse was built and in 1938 the name was changed into Leon Huyghe Ltd.. After this, the next significant turn took place in 1985, when the production was shifted from lagers and pilsners towards stronger, bottle conditioned ales.
26.12.1988 happened perhaps the biggest, most phenomenal uproar in the history of Brouwerij Huyghe. Delirium Tremens was first brewed and started to conquer the world. These days the brewery has maximum capacity of 35M litres per year and they are producing also 8 other brands, besides Delirium.
The definite flagship beer is Delirium Tremens – a strong blond ale, well known for the pink elephant, which is now travelling all around the world!
