The monastery was decided to be founded on the ruins of an old castle, on top of the Holy Mountain of Andechs – already at the end of the 14th Century. The funds were raised and finally seven monks vere sent to the site from Tegernsee in 1455. They brought with them also the know-how about brewing to the new monastery. It is almost certain that beer was brewed at the monastery from the very beginning.
The monastery was transferred in 1850 under the St. Boniface monastery in Munich and from then on, the golden era of the brewery really started. Andechs beers are still brewed at the monastery and the operation is overseen by the monks – they are actual monastic beers, or “Klosterbier”. The beers from Andechs came to Finland for the first time in late 1990’s.
